How Many NPC in Enshrouded? Full Guide to All Friendly, Hostile & Unique NPCs

If you’ve spent even a few hours wandering Enshrouded’s overgrown, fog-shrouded valleys and crumbling ancient ruins, you’ve probably run into more than a few faces that aren’t other players. I’ve spent over 80 hours grinding through the game’s early and mid-game zones to map every interaction, and one question I see pop up constantly in community threads is how many NPC in Enshrouded exist for players to meet, recruit, or fight. This guide breaks down every category of NPC, including rare ones you might miss if you only stick to the main quest path, so you don’t leave any useful rewards or story beats on the table.

How Many NPC in Enshrouded Are There, Total?

The exact count can shift a little with every content patch, as the devs regularly add new quest givers, enemies, and recruitable characters to expand the world. If you count every non-player controlled entity, including humanoid characters, wild animals, Shroud mutants, and boss enemies, the current total sits at 127 distinct NPC types. As of the latest content update, the total number of NPCs in Enshrouded sits at 127, counting both humanoid and non-humanoid entities that don’t count as player-controlled.

Some players prefer to only count humanoid NPCs in their tally, and if that’s the case, the total drops to 47. This split counts only quest givers, recruitable base inhabitants, wandering merchants, and human bandit enemies, excluding wild creatures and monster-type foes. It’s worth noting that this number will almost certainly rise as the game receives more updates, so don’t be surprised if you run into new NPC types that aren’t on this list a few months from now.

All NPCs fall into one of four broad categories: recruitable friendly, one-off quest friendly, common hostile, and unique elite or boss hostile. Each category serves a different purpose in the game, and tracking down all of them will give you access to the full range of crafting recipes, gear upgrades, and story content Enshrouded has to offer.

Recruitable Friendly NPCs: What They Bring to Your Base

There are 12 recruitable friendly NPCs in the game right now, each of which you have to rescue from a specific Shrouded ruin or encampment before they’ll move to your base. Each of these NPCs offers unique services, crafting recipes, and side quests that can make your playthrough far smoother, even if you don’t care much about base building. Many new players skip rescuing less obviously useful NPCs like the Bard or Farmer early on, but that’s a mistake that will cost you access to powerful buffs and time-saving resources later.

If you’re just starting out, prioritize rescuing these three NPCs first to make your early game grind much easier:

  • Blacksmith: Unlocks the first set of metal armor and weapon upgrades you can access, plus repairs broken gear for a small fee so you don’t waste materials on crafting replacements.
  • Farmer: Lets you grow food, fiber, and medicinal herbs right at your base, eliminating the need to forage for hours in high-risk Shroud zones for basic supplies.
  • Healer: Sells low-cost health potions and cures for Shroud corruption, a huge help when you first start exploring deeper fog areas without high-tier resistance gear.

I missed the Healer for the first 20 hours of my playthrough, and I can’t tell you how many times I died from minor corruption because I didn’t have access to cheap cures. You can find the Healer trapped in a small ruin just north of the starting base, so it’s worth taking 10 minutes to rescue them as soon as you have your first set of stone tools. The rest of the recruitable NPCs unlock at different points as you level up and explore more of the map, so keep an eye out for rescue markers on your compass as you wander.

Hostile NPCs You’ll Face Across Enshrouded’s Map

The largest group of NPCs by far is hostile entities, with 78 common respawning hostile types and 16 unique elite or boss NPCs. Common hostile NPCs include everything from low-level bandits and feral wolves to high-tier Shroud mutants and fire spirits that only spawn in the late-game mountain zones. Common hostile NPCs respawn every 10 to 15 minutes in most zones, so you can farm them for crafting materials, experience, and rare drops as needed.

Unique hostile NPCs, like the Shroud Wraith and the Bandit King, only spawn once per playthrough, or on very long cooldowns if you’re playing on a persistent server. These bosses drop exclusive crafting recipes, high-tier gear, and unique quest items you can’t get anywhere else, so it’s worth tracking them down even if you’re already overleveled for the zone they’re in. Most of these bosses have specific weaknesses you can exploit to make the fight easier, like fire damage for ice-type Shroud creatures or blunt weapons for heavily armored bandit elites.

One quick tip to avoid unnecessary fights: if you see a humanoid NPC that doesn’t attack you on sight, don’t swing first. There are several neutral quest givers in bandit-adjacent zones that players often kill by mistake, locking them out of side quests that give rare skill points and building skins. If you’re not sure if an NPC is friendly, try walking up to them slowly first, most hostile NPCs will aggro from 20 feet away or more if they’re going to attack.

Hidden, Rare NPCs Most Players Miss On Their First Playthrough

Outside of the main recruitable and quest NPCs, there are 7 rare, spawn-limited NPCs that most players never find on their first run through the game. These NPCs don’t show up on your compass, and many only spawn under specific weather or time conditions, so you have to be in the right place at the right time to find them. The rewards for tracking them down are worth the effort, though, ranging from exclusive weapon mods to extra skill points you can’t get from any other quest.

Wandering merchants only stay in one spot for 5 minutes after they spawn, so if you see one, stop whatever you’re doing to check their stock first. These merchants sell rare building materials and crafting recipes that you can’t buy from any of your base NPCs, including the recipe for the Shroud resistance amulet that makes early deep fog exploration far easier. They spawn randomly along major roads across the map, so keep an eye out for them when you’re traveling between zones.

Another easy-to-miss NPC is the ghostly historian, who gives a chain of 3 lore quests that reward you with 2 extra skill points total. The ghostly historian NPC only appears at night during clear weather, near the ruins of the old capital in the western part of the map. I only stumbled on the historian by accident when I was running from a pack of Shroud wolves one night, and the skill point reward let me unlock my third class skill 10 hours earlier than I would have otherwise. There are also a handful of rare passive creature NPCs, like the white Shroud fox, that drop unique crafting materials for decorative base items if you can catch them.

At the end of the day, counting how many NPC in Enshrouded exist is only half the fun, since half of the best parts of the game are stumbling on unexpected interactions as you explore. Don’t rush through the main quest without checking side paths and hidden ruins, you never know what useful NPC or rare reward you might find. Even if you’re only focused on building up your base and upgrading your gear, taking the time to track down every recruitable and rare NPC will make your playthrough far smoother and more rewarding than sticking to the bare minimum path.
