If you’ve spent any time grinding mid-game content in Enshrouded, you’ve probably hit a wall where your basic berry poultices and weak damage buffs just don’t cut it anymore. You might have seen recipes for advanced potions or Flame Altar upgrades that call for a rare-sounding material, and now you’re trying to figure out how to get alchemical base enshrouded. I’ve put over 45 hours into testing crafting routes and unlocking all NPCs since the last major update, so I’ve put together this no-fluff guide to get you set up with a steady supply of this core material in just a couple of hours of playtime. You won’t have to waste trips to high-level zones or fight unbeatable bosses to get it, either.
What You Need First to Get Alchemical Base in Enshrouded
Before you can even see the alchemical base recipe in your crafting menu, you need to check two key boxes first. You can’t craft alchemical base until you have the Alchemist NPC settled in your base, so if you haven’t rescued them yet, that’s your first priority. The Alchemist is trapped in a small locked cell inside the Ancient Spire in the Revelwood area, and you’ll need a level 3 lockpick to free them. Once they’re moved into a suitable home in your base, you’ll also need to upgrade your Alchemy Station to level 2. The basic level 1 station only makes low-grade tinctures and plant-based remedies, so you’ll need 10 iron bars and 5 cut stone to upgrade it to the tier that supports advanced crafting recipes.
You don’t need to beat any major story bosses to unlock either of these prerequisites, as long as you’ve progressed far enough to reach the Revelwood area. If you’re still stuck in the starting grasslands, focus on upgrading your Flame Altar to level 3 first to unlock access to the Revelwood fast travel point.
Exact Crafting Recipe for Alchemical Base
Once you have the Alchemist and a level 2 Alchemy Station active, the recipe for alchemical base will unlock automatically in your crafting menu. It only uses four common, easy-to-farm materials, no rare boss drops or hidden collectibles required. The full list of ingredients per alchemical base is:
- Liquid Solution: Crafted at any Alchemy Station from 1x Water and 2x Plant Fiber, you can make 50 of these in less than a minute with materials you probably already have stored in your base chests.
- Shroud Root: Foraged exclusively from glowing root nodes inside Shrouded zones, wear a basic Shroud Tonic when farming low-level Shroud areas to avoid taking passive decay damage while you harvest.
- Bone Dust: Made by placing regular animal or undead bones into a Grinder, you can get dozens of bones in a single run of any graveyard or low-level bandit camp.
- Sulfur: Mined from bright yellow volcanic rock nodes in the Kindlewastes area, or looted from storage chests in mid-tier bandit camps if you haven’t unlocked the high-heat zone yet.
Each alchemical base takes 10 seconds to craft, so if you load up 50 sets of ingredients, you can walk away to grab a drink and come back to a full stack waiting for you. You don’t need any rare or boss-exclusive drops to make alchemical base, which is a common misconception I see new players spread online all the time. You don’t even need to beat any major story bosses to access all the required materials, as long as you know where to look.
Fastest Farming Routes for Alchemical Base Ingredients
You could wander the map randomly collecting these materials, but if you want to stock up on enough alchemical base for 100 potions and a full set of base upgrades in under an hour, these are the routes I use on every new playthrough. For Shroud Root, head to the Revelwood Shroud entry point just west of the Ancient Spire. There are 14 Shroud Root nodes within a 2-minute run of the entry point, and the only enemies are low-level Shroud mobs that die in one hit from a mid-tier sword. You can farm 40 Shroud Roots in 10 minutes flat if you bring a sharp harvesting axe.
For Bone Dust, the small graveyard just north of the starting Longkeep village is unbeatable. Skeletons spawn nonstop here, and they drop 1-2 bones each every time you kill them. I usually spend 15 minutes here per playthrough, and that gives me enough bones to make 100 Bone Dust with some left over for other crafting recipes. Farm bandit camps in the Pike's Perch area if you haven’t unlocked the Kindlewastes yet for Sulfur. 3 out of every 5 large bandit camps in that area have at least 2 Sulfur in their main storage chest, so you can get enough for 15 alchemical bases without ever stepping foot in the high-heat zone.
I keep a small chest right next to my Alchemy Station stocked with 50 of each required ingredient at all times. That way, I don’t have to stop mid-prep for a boss run to go farming if I run out of alchemical base unexpectedly. It only takes one trip a week to restock if you’re playing 5-10 hours a week, so it’s well worth the time investment up front. If you’re playing with friends, split up the farming duties to cut the time down even more.
Best Uses for Alchemical Base Once You Have It
You might be tempted to hoard all your alchemical base once you start farming it, but it’s meant to be used to make your playthrough far easier. The most common use is for advanced healing potions: Greater Healing Potions use 1 alchemical base and 2 red berries, and they heal 75% of your maximum health over 3 seconds, compared to just 25% from basic berry poultices. These potions are non-negotiable for taking on any of the game’s major bosses, especially the Hollow King who deals massive burst damage.
Alchemical base is also required for all advanced buff potions, including the 30% Physical Damage Boost Potion and the 100% Mana Regen Potion. If you’re playing a mage build, you’ll go through dozens of these a week, so it’s worth keeping a steady supply on hand. You’ll also need alchemical base for higher tier Flame Altar upgrades: levels 4 and 5 of the Flame Altar require 10 and 20 alchemical base respectively, and those upgrades let you expand your base’s build range deep into high-level zones you couldn’t access before.
You should never sell alchemical base to roaming merchants, even if you think you have a surplus. The 15 gold you get per base is nothing compared to the hundreds of gold worth of potions or upgrades you can make with it. If you really want to make extra gold, craft the advanced potions and sell those instead, they sell for 10x the price of the raw alchemical base. I’ve made enough gold from selling crafted Greater Healing Potions to buy every rare crafting recipe from merchants across the map, no extra grinding required.
Don’t let a shortage of this core crafting material stop you from progressing through Enshrouded’s hardest zones or building the base of your dreams. Once you know how to get alchemical base enshrouded, you’ll be able to craft all the buffs, healing items, and upgrades you need to take on any challenge the game throws at you.
