If you’ve spent any time progressing through Enshrouded’s mid to late game content, you’ve almost certainly hit a wall where you need shroud cores to move forward. I remember spending three straight hours wandering low-level Shroud zones on my first playthrough, frustrated that I couldn’t find a single one no matter how many small corrupted enemies I killed. It wasn’t until I asked a more experienced player in my community that I learned I was looking in entirely the wrong places. This guide breaks down everything I’ve learned over 70+ hours of playtime about how to get shroud cores in Enshrouded, including the most reliable farm spots and mistakes to avoid.
What Are Shroud Cores, And Why Do You Need Them?
Shroud Cores are dense, purple crystalline materials formed from concentrated Shroud corruption, and they’re one of the most valuable rare resources in the entire game. You won’t need them for your first few hours of play, but once you hit level 10 and start upgrading your base and gear, they become non-negotiable for progress.
The most common uses for Shroud Cores include Flame Altar upgrades that expand your base’s buildable area and unlock higher-tier crafting stations. You’ll also need them for endgame armor and weapon recipes that let you take on the game’s toughest world bosses and clear the highest-level Shroud zones. Even if you’re mostly focused on building rather than combat, you’ll need a steady supply to unlock advanced building pieces and decorative items for your base.
It’s easy to underestimate how many you’ll need long-term, too. A full Flame Altar upgrade to max level requires 24 Shroud Cores alone, and crafting a full set of endgame Legendary armor adds another 12 on top of that. Farming them early and often saves you a ton of frustration later when you’re stuck waiting to progress because you’re one core short of an upgrade.
Where & How to Get Shroud Cores in Enshrouded: Proven Locations
Shroud Cores only spawn in Shroud zones that are level 10 or higher, so you can skip any low-level corrupted areas near the starting Cindervault biome entirely. I’ve tested every possible source of these cores across the entire map, and there are three consistently reliable ways to get them, no matter your playstyle:
- Defeat elite Shroud Warden enemies in level 10+ corrupted zones: These large, heavily armored purple enemies have a 100% drop rate for 1-2 Shroud Cores per kill, making them the most consistent source available.
- Loot locked purple shroud chests in high-level Shrouded areas: These chests are usually found near ruined structures deep inside corrupted zones, and have a 75% chance to drop 1 Shroud Core along with other rare crafting materials.
- Break large corrupted core nodes found deep inside Shroud chasms: These glowing purple crystal nodes spawn only in the deepest parts of level 15+ Shroud zones, and drop 2-3 Shroud Cores each when broken with a rare pickaxe or better.
If you’re a new player who hasn’t unlocked strong combat gear yet, start with looting the purple chests first. You can usually sneak past most small Shroud enemies to reach them, and you won’t have to fight a tough elite to get your first few cores. For players who are comfortable with combat, farming Shroud Wardens is the fastest option by far. I recommend bringing holy or fire damage weapons to take them down faster, as they’re very weak to both damage types.
You can also get Shroud Cores as a rare reward for completing high-level NPC side quests, but the drop rate is only around 20% so it’s not a reliable farming method. Stick to the three sources listed above if you need to farm a large number quickly.
Fastest Shroud Core Farming Route for New & Veteran Players
After testing dozens of different routes across the map, I found one that works for both new players who just hit level 10 and veteran players who want to farm as many cores as possible in a short time. The entire route takes around 15 minutes to complete, and you’ll walk away with 4-6 Shroud Cores per run on average.
Start at the Revelwood Ancient Spire fast travel point, and head west into the level 12 Shroud zone directly on the other side of the river. First, stop at the ruined watchtower just inside the Shroud boundary to loot the purple chest on the second floor. From there, head northwest to find the first Shroud Warden patrolling around a small ruined house, then continue further west to find a second Warden near a corrupted core node. Break the node if you have a high enough pickaxe, then head south to loot a second purple chest inside a collapsed mine entrance, and defeat the third Warden patrolling just outside the mine.
The entire route has three Shroud Wardens, two purple chests, and one corrupted core node, so even if you get unlucky with chest drops, you’ll still get at least 3 cores from the Wardens alone. All enemies and chests on the route have a 30 in-game minute respawn timer, so you can either do other activities around your base while you wait, or switch to a different server to farm the same route immediately if you’re playing multiplayer.
If you’re a new player running this route for the first time, don’t be afraid to sneak past the small corrupted enemies along the way. They don’t drop any cores, and fighting them just wastes time and uses up your healing supplies. Stick to the main targets, and you’ll be fine even if you’re still wearing uncommon or rare gear.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Farming Shroud Cores
I’ve made every possible mistake farming these cores over my playthrough, so I can save you a ton of time and frustration by pointing out the most common ones players make when they first start looking for Shroud Cores. The first and biggest mistake is wandering low-level Shroud zones looking for drops. As I mentioned earlier, cores only spawn in level 10+ corrupted areas, so you’re wasting your time if you’re looking anywhere lower than that.
Another common mistake is forgetting to bring enough anti-Shroud contamination potions before heading into a high-level zone. Even if you have an upgraded Flame Altar that gives you extra time in the Shroud, you’ll still run out of time before you finish the full route if you don’t have potions to extend your timer. I always bring at least 3 potions per run, just to be safe.
Don’t make the mistake of trying to fight Shroud Wardens head-on if you don’t have high-tier gear. They hit extremely hard, and can one-shot you if you’re wearing low-level armor. Instead, use the environment to your advantage: climb on top of rocks or ruined buildings where they can’t reach you, and attack them from range with a bow or staff. It takes a little longer, but it’s way safer, especially if you’re playing solo.
Finally, don’t forget to activate all nearby fast travel points before you head deep into a Shroud zone. I can’t tell you how many times I died with 4 cores in my inventory because I forgot to activate the closest fast travel point, and had to run all the way back from my base to retrieve my loot. If you die in the Shroud and don’t make it back to your body before your Shroud timer runs out, you’ll lose all the cores you collected on that run, so it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Farming Shroud Cores doesn’t have to be the frustrating, time-consuming grind it was for me when I first started. Once you know the right locations, the best route, and the mistakes to avoid, you’ll be able to collect all the cores you need in just a few hours of play. Now that you know how to get shroud cores in Enshrouded, you can skip all the trial and error and jump straight to upgrading your base, crafting endgame gear, and taking on the game’s toughest challenges.
